Some valuable news for you chicken-loving guys out there: Mississippi-based poultry producer Sanderson Farms is recalling 551,090 pounds of chicken products (that's over 275 tons) because it "may be contaminated with extraneous metal materials," according to an announcement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.
The good news: "None of the products that are the subject of this recall were shipped to grocery stores or packed directly for consumers," the company said in a press release. But the USDA has labeled the recall a Class I, meaning "there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death."
A processing facility discovered the chicken contained metal shavings, which was traced to a malfunctioning ice-making machine during production, the USDA release said.
Bottom line: You should still be fine to eat all that lean, protein-rich chicken. But as with anything you're eating, it's always wise to know where it's coming from and how it gets from a farm to your table.
